Job Summary

To assist in the smooth operation of an ophthalmology practice.  To perform basic, advanced and complex procedures in assisting the physician; all to be handled accurately, quickly, and courteously.  Must be well organized and have the ability to work in a team-oriented environment, have excellent computer skills, time management skills, communicate effectively with patients, physicians and other staff members.  Must be flexible in work assignments and schedule; demonstrate commitment to ongoing education and upgrading of skills.  Must meet and adhere to MFEC policies and procedures, uphold to the highest ethical principles of maintaining confidentiality and other performance standards.


Essential skills and experience:


Basic skills:

  • Basic lensometry
  • Basic pupil exam
  • Confrontation visual field
  • Perform BAT, PAM and Lambda
  • Indention tonometry
  • Refractions 

Patient Services:

  • Assist physician with needs/requests; loading rooms, scribing, assisting patients, phone calls, medication/instruments, etc
  • Explanation of common surgical procedures (Cataract, DESK, PTK, YAG Cap, SLT, PI and Retinal Lasers).
  • Explanation of all IOL lens options
  • Basic explanation of Retinal injections
  • Administer patient questionnaires
  • Constant time management
  • Be at work on time


Instrument / Exam room maintenance:

  • Check all exam rooms for proper supplies and check equipment for proper working conditions
  • Perform basic instrument maintenance on equipment (bulbs and batteries)


Additional Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform Auto Refraction 
  • Perform OPD
  • Monitor tech bin and lab bin for Physicians, make patient phone calls
  • Report Physician request changes to lead assistant
  • Communicate effectively with on-site supervisor
  • Adhere to MFEC policy manual
  • Refrain from work place gossip
  • Other duties as assigned by Clinic Director



  • High School diploma or GED
  • Detail orientated, enjoy working with the public and possess exceptional customer service skills.  Must be CMSS certified.



  • Advanced comprehension of the ophthalmic assistant skills as outlined by the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel
    in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO).  Prefer employee to take AAO home study course after the first year of employment.  Prefer
    COA certification at 2 years employment and COT certification at 4 years of employment.



  • Experience is not required, but preferred.



  • Must be able to sit or stand for long periods of time.
  • Must be able to write and type.
  • Must be able to communicate via phone.
  • Must be able to read data from and enter into the computer correctly.
  • Job frequently requires: walking, standing, stooping, crouching, twisting, balancing, hearing and handling objects with
  • Must be able to lift 25lbs.
