Our Ophthalmic Technicians are a vital part of our clinical team and require the ability to clearly and effectively communicate with a diverse patient base. They are responsible for comforting patients while performing necessary diagnostic tests and measurements that instills patient confidence in their treatment.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities:

  • Initial work up of patients such as gathering chief complaint, ocular and systemic history, past family and social history and complete review of systems.
  • Measuring visual acuities, intraocular pressures, keratometry, refraction and pachymetry.
  • External examination and slit lamp
  • Neutralizes eye glasses by either manual Lensometry or automated Lensometry. Is able to measure prism in spectacles and mark optical centers.
  • Performs Auto-Refraction prior to MD or OD exam.
  • Performs the following as needed: Ishihara Color Vision, Stereo testing, Amsler grid, Confrontational Visual Fields (CVF) and Extra Ocular Movements (EOMS).

  • Performs tear osmolarility testing as needed.

  • Performs subjective refraction: cross cylinder technique.

  • Performs Applanation or Tono Pen tonometry on patient as needed.

  • Performs angle assessment and pupil assessment prior to dilating patient.

  • Performs BAT and PAM tests as directed by MD.

  • Performs corneal Pachymetry as needed.
  • Is able to accurately perform VF’s: Humphrey Visual field.
  • Performs OCT ( ocular coherence topography).
  • Is able to take Fundus photos.
  • Is able to insert and remove both a soft and hard contact lens and to instruct patient on insertion and removal techniques for contact lenses.
  • Scribe in electronic medical records format to document the patient visit and examination.
  • Code for services.

Qualifications

Qualifications:

  • Candidate must possess exemplary and demonstrable customer service acumen
  • Possess at least one year of experience in a clinical setting
  • High school graduate or equivalent

  • Ability to work as a team member as well as independently

  • Well-organized with attention to detail and the ability to multi-task

  • Strong leadership and critical thinking/problem solving skills
  • Some general medical knowledge, including diseases and medications that are pertinent to patient care in ophthalmology is preferred
