    Upon completion of basic training our Opticians will dispense and fit spectacles, contact lenses and other optical aides, working from printed or computerized prescriptions with assistance.  They also advise patients on various types of lenses and spectacle frames, including advice on style, weight, and color.  They are responsible for instructing patients on how to wear and care for their spectacles and contacts.


    Essential Functions:                 

    • Greet all patients entering the optical area regardless of their intent to purchase.
    • Consult with patients about their life style and to select appropriate products based on the needs of the individual. 
    • Read and interpret eyeglass and contact lens prescriptions as written by the eye care providers, and follow all instructions accordingly.
    • Take time to assist in taking frame and facial measurements to ensure correct fit and positioning. 
    • Use small handheld instruments as well as larger instruments and machines, including: pupilometer and lensometer.
    • Troubleshoot patient complaints; and adjust or repair spectacles as needed.
    • Communicate with patients regarding their insurance benefits and pricing.
    • Coordinate with the clinical associates/doctors to ensure a clean handoff from clinic to dispensary.
    • Work in cooperation with other dispensary associate to meet and exceed daily and monthly sales goals.

    Sales Responsibilities:

    • Sell eye exams. Recommending annual eye exams to every patient will benefit the patient through good eye health and improved vision as well as benefit the practice.
    • Keep up to date on all sale events and assist in training all associates to correctly inform all patients on such specials.
    • Describe and present the product’s features, advantages and benefits to the patient. Be sure to present to the patient the current specific targeted product.
    • Submit all paperwork and orders on time, with attention to detail and accuracy. Ensure proper authorization is received for all billable vision care patient orders when the order is placed.

    Other Duties and Responsibilities:

    • Dispense contact lenses and instruct patients on care and use.
    • May obtain insurance information and authorizations.
    • Use hand-stone to adjust lens fit.
    • Arrange product and maintain order of the optical dispensary; ensure cleanliness of all displays, frames, and lenses.
    • Check orders to ensure specifications and quality standards.
    • Follow up on orders and communicate necessary information to patients in a timely manner.
    • Ensure you are continuously training and using all available materials to build expertise in optometric field.
    • Learn about features and benefits of products.




    • High school diploma or equivalent, some college preferred.
    • Customer centric focus.
    • Strongly prefer demonstrated sales experience.
    • Strongly prefer some ophthalmic experience but not required.
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, ability to work as a team player.
    • Excellent math skills that allow for precise work (basic algebraic equations and monetary calculations).
    • Strong organization and problem solving skills, proficient with Microsoft applications
    • Ability to make decisions using industry standards that can be checked with precise measurements of accuracy.
