  • Overview

    The Tech is responsible for daily patient care and flow for clinic and physicians assigned to.  The Tech will promptly and professionally assist the doctor in patient eye care.


    The Tech should enter the following History InTake:

    • Review of Patient’s Medical History Sheet
    • Eliciting and documenting chief complaint
    • Use proper abbreviations and correct spelling


    • Common Eye Diseases Symptoms
    • Systemic Disorders
    • Common ocular and systemic meds
    • Medications and the diseases the patient is prescribed
    • Common eye medications and usage
    • Proper eye drop technique and sterility

    Responsibilities /Duties

    • Communicate with patients regarding follow up care, surgeries, procedures, changes in schedule, symptoms, surgery schedules.
    • Maintains and cleans all equipment being used.
    • Returns phone calls to patients and pharmacies daily.
    • Assist in minor surgery
    • Maintains patient confidentiality
    • Efficiently and accurately interviews patients and documents histories

    Accurately performs:

    • Refractions
    • Lensometry
    • Kartometry
    • Tonometry
    • Visual Fields
    • Amsler grids
    • Muscle Testing
    • Pupil Exams
    • Topography

    Minimum Demonstrated Skills

    • Consistently works with 3 patients per hour
    • Demonstrates working knowledge of eye anatomy, disease, symptoms and ocular meds.
    • Has a working understanding of A-Scans, fundus photos, nerve fiber analysis and fluorescein angiography.
    • Has basic knowledge of contact lenses.
    • Utilizes proper eye drop technique and sterility.
    • Utilizes proper universal precaution procedures.
    • Understands characteristics of common anterior segment disorders and oculoplastic conditions.
    • Understands and communicates well to patients about cataract and oculoplastic surgery.
    • Understands and follows procedures for surgical and procedural consents
    • Displays consistent professionalism.
    • Is energetic and empathetic with patients
    • Consistently display positive rapport with co-workers
    • Cooperates with supervisory staff and physicians
    • Scribes readily when doctor desires
    • Demonstrates flexibility in job assignment
    • Demonstrates initiative in accomplishing practice goals
    • Maintains certification

    Physical Demands

    • Must be able to stand for long periods of time
    • Must be able to write and type
    • Must be able to hold arms at shoulder height
    • Must be able to communicate via phone
    • Must have manual dexterity to work with Ophthalmic equipment

    Qualifications and Education Requirements

    Employee must be trained in Ophthalmology with related on-the-job experience, Ophthalmic Certified Tech, or an Associate Degree preferred. Successful completion of JCAHPO Certified Ophthalmic Assistant requirements.

    1. Technology: KeyMedical Practice Management, EMA Electronic Health Records, Microsoft Office, Mozilla Firefox
    2. Knowledge: Electronic equipment, fax, copier, printer, scanner, mail meter, computer, hardware and software, including applications and required programs
