Overview

Directly supervises the Optical Associates in the Optical Dispensary while they perform their daily activities. The Optical Supervisor coordinates staffing needs to meet the demand of the patients. This is a hands-on supervisory position which is also responsible for: dispensing and fitting spectacles, contact lenses and other optical aides, working from printed or computerized prescriptions. This position advises patients on various types of lenses and spectacle frames, including advice on style, weight, and color. Instructs patients on how to wear and care for their spectacles and contacts. This position requires extensive technical expertise, a retail/sales sensibility, and a capacity for compassion in dealings with patients.

 

Responsibilities

  • Greet all patients entering the optical area regardless of their intent to purchase.
  • Consult with patients to select appropriate products based on the needs of the individual.
  • Actively listen and question the patient/customer regarding life style to aid in proper lens and frame selection.
  • Read and interpret eyeglass and contact lens prescriptions as written by the eye care providers, and follow all instructions accordingly.
  • Take frame and facial measurements to ensure correct fit and positioning.
  • Use small handheld instruments as well as larger instruments and machines, including: pupilometer, lensometer, and hand-stone.
  • Strives for a culture that focuses on the patient first.

  • Ensures that employees follow the practice’s policies and procedures.

  • Review the needs of the department and employees.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent, some college preferred.
  • It is highly preferred that all Optical Managers obtain ABO certification within 18 months of employment.
  • Customer centric focus.
  • Strongly prefer demonstrated sales experience.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, ability to work as a team player.
  • Excellent math skills that allow for precise work (basic algebraic equations and monetary calculations).
  • Ability to make decisions using industry standards that can be checked with measurements of accuracy.
