The Retina Technician performs a range of duties which includes preparing the patient to see the physician by conducting a preliminary exam which includes collecting medical history and providing the appropriate testing. As a clinical technician, you will also prepare treatment/exam rooms, administer eye medications, clean and maintain ophthalmic instruments and assist physicians during in office procedures. In addition, responding to front office requests and working in partnership with all clinical office departments to promote a cooperative and supportive practice setting to positively impact the patient experience is expected.

Responsibilities

  • Establish rapport with patients through introduction
  • Initiate patient evaluation, documenting the chief complaint, history of present illness, review of systems, and all pertinent ocular findings accurately and in accordance with compliance guidelines and clinic procedures
  • Perform pre-exam testing which may include administering eye drop medication
  • Perform retinal photography and diagnostic photography including fundus photos and fluorescein angiography as instructed by physician
  • Create patient photo records, complete requests for prescription refills as authorized by physician, with full and appropriate patient chart documentation
  • Educate patients regarding administration of medications and pre- and post-operative instructions as directed by physician
  • Conduct inventory of ophthalmic supplies, including pharmaceuticals and instruments on a regular basis
  • Assist with maintenance of clinical examination equipment
  • Clean instruments in preparation for sterile processing
  • Inspect instruments periodically for damage and following all office procedures to send and/or request for repairs and replacements
  • Check temperature of medical refrigerator daily.
  • Check expiration date and inventory of medications kept in refrigerator and replace, as necessary
  • Open and close exam lanes daily, ensuring that equipment is wiped down and sanitized as per office guidelines, battery powered instruments are placed in re-charge wells, and equipment is powered off and covered
  • Follow all safety procedures as per practice and company guidelines
  • Scribing for ophthalmologist during exam may be required
  • Set up exam area and prepare patients for retina injection
  • Conduct all testing as requested by physician or required based on appointment type, including OCT Scans, fundus photos, and fluorescein angiography
  • Perform additional testing as required which may include manual refractions with Epic or manual phoropter, and checking intraocular pressures with appropriate instruments
  • Position may require the knowledge and ability to provide and/or assist with coding for services
  • Must be willing to travel between locations to support clinic operations (only applicable for multi-location practices)
  • Must be willing to work early mornings, late evenings, and weekends as required to support business needs
  • Execute duties of position in a professional and courteous manner
  • Handle sensitive information in a confidential manner
  • Perform other tasks and duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent required
  • Achievement of ophthalmic certifications preferred (OSC, COA, and COT)
  • Possess strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Well-organized, team-player with great attention to detail
  • Demonstrate superior computer skills
  • Highly energetic with positive attitude
  • Must be able to walk and stand for eight hours
  • Must be able to type or write legibly in a dimly lit setting
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills as well as a neat and professional appearance
  • Experience as an ophthalmic scribe or technician preferred
  • Two + years performing as a retina technician preferred
