The Surgical Coordinator requires the ability to clearly and effectively communicate with a diverse group of associates and patients.  This position is responsible for entering all surgeries at the center, maintaining extensive contact with business office personnel, department coordinators and frequent contact with patients and/or their representatives, as well as routine contact with physicians' offices.

Responsibilities

  • Schedules surgical procedures, checking surgeons block time, staff and equipment conflicts, maintains the block schedule.
  • Notifies appropriate staff of additions and cancellations of cases.
  • Maintains public relations with physician’s scheduling secretaries, encouraging positioning of cases with center.
  • Answers telephones, routes calls, takes messages, and provides routine information to customers promptly and courteously.
  • Participates in adverse incident reporting program.
  • Completes patient registration as they arrive for surgery.
  • Assures patient safety/privacy.
  • Requests clinical direction in prioritizing patients for registration as needed.
  • Verifies all demographic information including insurance information for accuracy.
  • Makes additions/corrections to information, keying the changes into the computer data base.
  • Collects any money due from patient on day of surgery as outlined by the Patient Account Representative.
  • Completes necessary accounting paperwork to ensure proper assignment of money to the patient's account.
  • Notifies the preoperative nurse of the patient's readiness for admission to the unit in a timely manner.
  • Provides information regarding case status and patient recovery as instructed by the clinical staff.
  • Provides directions within the Center for all visitors.

Qualifications

  • Possess a minimum of a HS diploma with some college preferred.
  • Two or more years of experience in a ophthamology medical or surgical environment.
  • Possess strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Be a well-organized, team-player with great attention to detail.
  • Ability to effectively handle multiple responsibilities at one time.
  • Demonstrate superior computer skills.
  • Experience with EMR and EPM.
  • General knowledge of medical conditions affecting eye surgery.
  • Some travel between offices will/may be required.
