Madison Street Surgery Center is seeking an energetic, patient-focused, Full Time Registered Nurse for our multi-specialty ophthalmology practice in Denver, Colorado. This role offers a low-stress, predictable workday, a four-day work week with no nights, no weekends and no major holidays, a comprehensive benefits package, and a collaborative, respectful work environment.

 

Ideal candidates will have previous experience in ophthalmology procedures, such as cataracts, retina, cornea, and glaucoma procedures.  Experience in pre-operative, post-operative, and/or intra-operative nursing is preferred.

The Peri-Operative Nurse is responsible for the safety and care of the patient throughout the continuum of care from pre-admission to post-discharge. Incorporating current clinical knowledge with established nursing practice, the Peri-Operative nurse performs nursing interventions utilizing the nursing process. By assessing the individual patient and the scheduled surgical procedure, the Peri-Operative nurse anticipates the needs of the patient and provides for those needs while maintaining a safe and therapeutic environment.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluates patients’ health history and status via review of the pre-operative History and Physical, ensuring all required documentation is present prior to the day of surgery
  • Provides timely and accurate pre-operative instructions to patients via pre-admission phone contact
  • Prepares the pre-operative patient for the scheduled surgery or procedure following surgeon and anesthesia provider standing orders
  • Provides appropriate care to the post-operative patient including monitoring for emergence from anesthesia and providing discharge instructions to patients and their family/responsible party
  • Completes post-operative phone contact with patients
  • Assumes responsibility and accountability for the safety and administration of quality care to each patient to meet their physical, psychological, and psychosocial needs
  • Continuously evaluates the patient’s response to nursing interventions and modifies the plan of care to achieve desired outcomes
  • Maintains electronic medical records during all patient encounters, including recognition of the need for narrative recording of unusual perioperative events, such as cancellation of procedure by anesthesia provider or medical emergencies
  • Administers medications safely, adhering to Safe Injection Practices and Controlled Substance Policies & Procedures 
  • Participate in medication and supply inventory maintenance via regular checking and restocking of patient care areas and assigned supply and/or medication expiration dates checks
  • Adheres to all Infection Control Policies & Procedures
  • All other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Registered Nurse license
  • BLS Certification
  • ACLS Certification
  • Two years’ experience as a Registered Nurse, with ideally at least one year of experience occurring in a perioperative setting or other specialty where sterile procedures are performed
  • Working knowledge of nursing performance standards, including knowledge of the care of the surgical patient in ambulatory surgery
  • Basic understanding of ambulatory surgery center equipment: patient monitor, glucometer, medical gases, AED/defibrillator, etc.
  • Ability to assess patients’ needs: physical, educational, emotional, spiritual, and age appropriate
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as surgeon’s notes, pre-surgical history and physicals, post-surgical evaluations, etc.
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills
  • Self-directed; able to work efficiently both independently and as a member of a team
