Our Top Candidate will bring at least one year of medical billing experience, preferably in a busy optometry practice.

The Cash Application Specialist is responsible for manually reviewing all remittances from patients and payors as well as posting payments, adjustments, and denials from insurance companies, patients, and government agencies.

Responsibilities

  • Manually enter remittances if electronic remittance advice (ERA) is unavailable or not applicable to the payor
  • Complete registration on all essential payor portals and submit the necessary verification documents for access
  • Retrieve and post remittances from payor websites
  • Review remittances for applicable adjustments, transfers to the managed service provider, or patient transfers
  • Accurately post all payments within 24 hours of receipt
  • Maintain acceptable error rate as per communicated department goals
  • Investigate unidentified payments to determine the appropriate resolution
  • Keep all logs and spreadsheets used for reconciliation up to date and well maintained
  • Balance daily, weekly, and monthly bank deposit reports
  • Respond to all questions and inquiries regarding the posting of payments
  • Partner with billing managers to resolve any discrepancies
  • Post refund checks issued by the accounting department for overpayments
  • Identify patterns and trends that indicate a potential issue and notify manager

Qualifications

  • High School Graduate or General Education Degree (GED)
  • Associate’s degree
  • Three years of professional medical billing and collecting experience, or certification obtained from a nationally accredited billing program, i.e., CMBS (Certified Medical Billing Specialist)
  • Two years of payment/cash posting experience in optometry and ophthalmology
  • Knowledge of payor contracts and explanation of benefits (EOB)
  • Experience working in a clearinghouse
  • Experience with Excel and Windows-based programs
  • Basic understanding of accounting and math skills
  • Prefer experience with NextGen PM/EHR
  • Prefer two or more years of optometry and ophthalmology third-party billing guidelines and expertise
