Our top Candidate will bring at least one year of optometric/ophthalmic technician experience or one year of medical front desk experience, preferably in an ophthalmology or optometry practice. However, we are prepared to train a candidate with background in a medical speciality or with a background of strong tenure and progression in a retail/customer service field.

As an essential member of the ophthalmology healthcare team, the Ophthalmology Diagnostic Technician plays a crucial role in assisting ophthalmologists in diagnosing and treating various eye conditions and disorders and are responsible for operating diagnostic equipment to obtain images and measurements as ordered by the physician.

 

Responsibilities

  • Obtain a detailed patient history, including any eye-related symptoms, medical conditions, and medications.
  • Administer basic vision tests, such as visual acuity and color vision testing, to gather essential information.
  • You will also conduct a variety of specialized tests, including but not limited to:
  • Fundus Photography: Capturing images of the back of the eye to assess the retina and optic nerve
  • Visual Field Testing: Evaluating peripheral vision to detect abnormalities
  • Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT): Creating high-resolution cross-sectional images of the eye's structures
  • A-scan and B-scan Ultrasound: Measuring the size and structure of the eye, useful for diagnosing conditions like glaucoma and retinal detachment
  • Corneal Topography: Mapping the cornea's curvature to assist in fitting contact lenses and diagnosing corneal conditions

Qualifications

  • A minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent is typically required, although some positions may prefer or require post-secondary training in ophthalmic technology
  • Certification as a Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT) or Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) is highly regarded
  • Strong communication skills and empathy for patient care
  • Proficiency in operating ophthalmic diagnostic equipment and software
  • Attention to detail and the ability to work in a fast-paced clinical environment
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and eye anatomy
